What is Diabetes?

Diabetes Mellitus (MEL-ih-tus), or diabetes, is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose (sugar) levels that result from defects in the body’s ability to produce and/or use insulin. Insulin is the hormone that allows blood glucose to get inside the body’s cell and be used as energy. When the body fails to convert the blood glucose to energy, the blood glucose accumulates in the bloodstream, resulting in high blood glucose levels.
